Beyond the Block: Serbia and Bosnia
When our founder, Debbie, traveled to the Balkan Peninsula on a backpacking trip with her friend, she did not expect to make a video out of the trip. But she found herself so inspired by the lived experiences of the people she met there that she had to share the trip with her students.
Part travel narrative and part historical exploration, this video gives students an overview of the countries of Serbia and Bosnia. Students will leave this presentation with a geographical understanding of the Balkan region, a general historical overview of the Balkan war of 1991-1995, and insights into the human suffering caused by violence.
Students will be encouraged to explore the connection between media, war, and the use of violence in their own lives. And they will observe the strength and tenacity of the people who endured the war, refusing to let go of their will to live despite difficult circumstances.
